Both options are legitimate — we’ll say that upfront even though we sell one of them. The right answer depends on how your business actually uses its website. Here’s the honest comparison.
Where a freelancer wins
- Deep custom work. If you need features built, integrations coded, or a redesign, you want a developer on an hourly or project basis — that’s not maintenance-plan territory.
- Context. A long-term freelancer knows your site’s history and quirks. That knowledge is genuinely valuable.
- No monthly commitment. If your site truly needs attention twice a year, paying per incident can be cheaper.
Where a freelancer falls over
- Availability is luck. Your emergency competes with their project deadlines, holidays and other clients. “I can look at it Thursday” is a normal answer — to a problem costing you money today.
- Nobody’s watching between incidents. Freelancers respond when called. Updates, backups and monitoring need to happen when nothing is wrong — and per-hour billing gives no one an incentive to do boring prevention.
- Bus factor of one. Freelancers change careers, emigrate, and get busy. Our support inbox is full of “my developer disappeared”.
Where a maintenance service wins
- Prevention is the product. Updates, daily backups, security scans and monitoring happen on schedule because that’s literally what the fee buys.
- Predictable cost. A flat R499–R1,999/month you can budget, versus emergency invoices you can’t.
- Defined response times. A plan comes with an SLA in writing, not a hopeful WhatsApp.
Where a maintenance service falls over
- Scope limits are real. Flat-fee plans cover small tasks (ours: under 60 minutes each). Big builds get quoted separately — if you constantly need custom dev, a plan alone won’t fit.
The decision in one question
Is your website a project (being actively built and changed) or an asset (built, working, needs protecting)? Projects need a freelancer or agency. Assets need maintenance. Many businesses sensibly use both: a plan for the baseline, a developer for the big stuff — and we’re happy to work alongside yours.
