The local-vs-international hosting question comes up in almost every onboarding call we do. There’s no universal answer, but there is a clear framework.
The case for hosting locally
- Latency to South African visitors. A server in Johannesburg or Cape Town responds to local visitors noticeably faster than one in Amsterdam or Virginia. For a site whose customers are overwhelmingly South African, this is a real, measurable speed advantage.
- Support in your timezone. Local hosts answer the phone during your business hours, in your context. When something breaks at 9am, “our US team comes online at 3pm” is a bad sentence.
- Rand pricing. No exchange-rate surprises on renewal.
The case for international hosting
- More horsepower per rand at the top end. Global providers operate at scales local hosts can’t, and premium managed WordPress hosting (staging environments, built-in caching, expert-level support) is mostly an international product.
- A CDN mostly erases the distance. Cloudflare’s free tier caches your site at their Johannesburg and Cape Town edge nodes — international hosting plus a CDN often feels local to visitors.
- Mature tooling. Automatic staging, one-click PHP version switching, and proper isolation are still uneven in the local market.
What actually matters more than location
We’ve seen brilliant and terrible hosting in both categories. Judge any host on:
- Server resources — R59/month shared hosting is overloaded regardless of the flag on the data centre.
- PHP versions offered — if they don’t offer current PHP, run.
- Backup policy — automatic, and restorable by you without a support ticket?
- Real support response — email them a technical pre-sales question and time the answer. That’s your preview of every future crisis.
Our default recommendations
- Local services business, local customers: a reputable SA host on a mid-tier plan, plus Cloudflare free.
- E-commerce or high traffic: managed WordPress hosting (usually international) plus a CDN — the tooling pays for itself the first time staging saves your checkout.
- On a WP Hero Basic plan: hosting is included, so this becomes our problem, not yours — which is rather the point.
