Setup a redirect with WordPress

There are a few reasons why you would want to set a redirect for your website, the reason would be that you recently had your website redesigned and the web developer did not keep your former link structure intact and as a result, you are losing valuable visits due to ‘404 page not found’ error.

You can view the missing pages (404 Errors) from Google webmaster tools.

You can view the missing pages from Google webmaster tools. Once you discover what pages are not working, you will most likely want to redirect them to the new page which has replaced it.

The best redirect option is a 301 redirect so that you will be able to keep your ranking and links and not lose traffic due to the old page no longer being available.

There are many different ways for you to do a redirect to keep it simple, I will show you how to do it with a WordPress plugin.

Which plugin to use:

There are a ton of plugins in the WordPress repository but for this article, we are going to use the SEO Redirection plugin, it supports 301, 302 and 307 redirects. It also supports wild card redirection, which will allow you to send any 404 error it finds to a specific page.

To get the plugin just navigate on your WordPress dashboard to the plugin section and click ‘add new’, from there you can either search for the plugin and install it or download it on WordPress.org

SEO redirect plugin setup

Once you have installed the plugin look under the ‘settings’ section of your WordPress dashboard for ‘SEO Redirection’. Once you are on the plugin page you will see an option to ‘add a new redirect’.

To add a redirect you first input the old url and then in the next box, you can input the new url.

I hope this has been helpful to you, please let us know in the comments if you require further information.
